Center for the Production of frozen and refrigerated sperm
REGULATIONSFollowing the decree of the 25th of january 1988, concerning equine artificial insemination, the licence holder, head of the center, who is responsible for the center of production, is authorized to proceed with the collecting, packaging, identification, preservation and transfer of the stallion's sperm in 2 ways :
* refrigerated, transported at 4 degrees C in a refrigerated case
* frozen, transported at - 196 degrees C in a nitrogen vat.
The regulations vary according to the race :
* Thoroughbreds : forbidden
* French trotters : authorized in IAF (fresh), refused in IAR (refrigerated) and IAC (frozen), except for export
* Selle Français, Anglo - Arabs and cross-bred thoroughbreds: authorized

Center for the collecting
and transfer of embryos
REGULATIONSFollowing the decree of the 28th of march 1996, the process of collecting, examining, treating, packaging, stocking and placing of equine embryos can only be done by a center for the transfer of embryos recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture under the technical responsability of a vet and a head of the equine artificial insemination center.
The authorization to take and transfer an embryo from a mare varies according to the race .
* Thoroughbred : refused
* Pony : special request
* French Trotter : authorization of a single transfer for a mare or one of her descendants having won at least three classic races and after approval by the Stud-Book commission.
* Selle Français and Anglo - Arab : free for mares declared before the first covering at the National Stud which the transfer center belongs to; the mare "donor" being authorized to be gestating.

- DEFINITION AND INTERESTS -
This non-chirurgical artificial technic of reproduction consists of taking one or several embryos after in-vivo fecundation (natural or artificial insemination) from a mare called "donor" to transfer the said embryo(s), seven days after ovulation to a mare called the "receiver" who will ensure its growth and development up to weaning.By freezing the embryo, this technique makes it possible to defer the time and place (by changing the uterus) of conception which has several advantages :
* the possibility of following an active, sporting career at the same time as one of a mare
- for a young mare, it can shorten the time between generations and further genetic progress.
- for a mare of high genetic value, it allows her foals to be sold while she is ensuring their promotion by taking part in sporting events.
* lengthening the reproductive career of a valuable old mare.
* the solution to fertility problems which may arise during the gestation period.
* the increase in the number of descendants of a mare of high genetic value.
* the freezing of embryos to preserve a rare genetic heritage, or one that is about to disappear.
